This Week’s Cartoon: “Drooly Julie in ‘Hard Science’”

OK, so I couldn’t resist the Weiner story. But at least I tried to address the larger issue of  the media’s obsession with sex scandals, as opposed to drawing something that basically said “Haw haw! Politician can’t keep it in his pants!” Unlike the lawmakers who supported the Iraq War, Weiner never cost anyone his or her life. Nor was he hypocritical like so many “family values” politicians who try to micromanage other people’s sex lives (as Dan Savage put it) while taking liberties with his own. Plus, the boniferous crotch shot had a certain je ne sais quoi.

Seriously, though, it’s a huge problem for our democracy that the important issues — especially ones involving money — tend to be too dry and complex for mass appeal. Because that’s really where the action is. Not in Weiner’s underpants!

“Unlike the lawmakers who supported the Iraq War, Weiner never cost anyone his or her life.”

Aw Jen, you’re so sweet when you actually expect our politicians to behave like responsible adults whose decisions may lead to life or death. You know, kind of like a Congress who decides to allow the President to ignore the law of the land. (Messrs. Reid and Boehner, I am looking pointedly at you.) I mean, any second now I’m expecting the constant stream of cartoons pillorying Obama for the current operations in Libya just as you (justifiably, I might add) ripped into his predecessor for previous insanity in Iraq. (Yes, I am jabbing you because your cartoons are funny as hell…and just like Jon Stewart I don’t think you should give anyone a pass. Why? Because you do more in four panels than most columnists do in 1000 words, and _that_ means people would understand it.)

“Nor was he hypocritical like so many “family values” politicians who try to micromanage other people’s sex lives (as Dan Savage put it) while taking liberties with his own.”

So you’re saying it’s okay since, after all, Weiner never claimed to have family values? So when a GOPer says the Dems are a party without “family values” you’re going to say “Goddamn right, Bible thumper!”? Just sayin’, gotcha politics is either f*cked up regardless of the party and past statements…or it isn’t. By this logic you should be allllllll over John Edwards right about now. I mean, like white on rice, flies on cadavers, vampires on O+s and Eric Holder on Black Panthers (wait, speaking of hypocrites).

All teasing (and yes people, I am 90% teasing our fair hostess) aside, it is a sad testimony on our Republic that more people can probably tell you whether Anthony Weiner is a boxer or briefs man than can name five of the Bill of Rights off the top of their head.
