Oregon militants: Patriots… or Owl Qaeda?

I’m fine with a little healthy civil disobedience, but once you add guns to the mix and threaten to use them against the powers that be, you’re no longer just a protester. You are, at the very least, a militant. As many others have rightly noted, the kid gloves treatment these extremists are getting would likely be denied to other groups attempting to occupy a government building with weapons. Not that I don’t support letting them slowly run out of Twinkies.

Did you know the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was established by Teddy Roosevelt and hosts over 320 bird species? Speaking as an occasional birdwatcher, it looks awesome. Hopefully those bozos will be gone in time for the Harney County Migratory Bird Festival to proceed in April as planned.

And yes, somebody actually had to write this for their website:

Can you imagine what would happen if a group of muslim anti-government “militia” members took over any government building? Heads would explode. But when christian white men do it the government sits back and does nothing.

Yeah, but giving them the martyrdom they want and validating their paranoia is just a stupid thing to do. It becomes that much harder to propagate the notion that everyone’s out to get them if they do something like this and are just plain ignored.

      • TheSarge

That is, of course, the correct response. Ignore them, isolate them, don’t give them a spotlight. I’m just pointing out that the US Government has a double standard when it comes to terrorism. If it’s radical islamic terrorism then they overreact and go bomb the fuck out of anywhere some foreign country that muslim terrorists might possibly be despite the evidence for that being dubious, thereby engendering entire generations of young muslims into hating everything american. If it’s home-grown terrorists like this bunch of right-wing-nut then they sit back and let them threaten everyone becasue they are screaming about their 2nd Ammendment rights, as if that gives them carte-blanche to commit criminal trespass and walk around waving guns in everyone’s face. Wonderfully fucked up police state the americans have got going on down there.

But at the same time you can’t just let nutjobs get away with this sort of crap. Parading around with guns is bad enough but when you go and break into a federal building that’s criminal behavior and you can’t just let people do that without consequences. What’s next, any nutjob with a gun can just walk into any federal building and shut it down becasue they are white, gun-toting and stupid? It’s open season on occupying and shuting down any federal building, just show your guns and your copy of the 2nd ammendment and you can just go and do it? So, cut off the power, kill the phone lines, turn off the water and then have the FBI arrest them when they start crying and moaning about how they are being oppressed. After all, the oppressive government that they hate so much owes them free food, power, water, land and guns. It’s in the consititution there somewhere, in the back somewhere under the little-known right to burn diesel fuel.

You’re right that the response to 9/11 was a tragic mistake. It would be best, though, not to repeat it in the name of egalitarianism.

Terrorism isn’t war – it’s politics. They want to stage a situation where the big bad government makes them into heroes and victims. A violent response will embolden them far more than ignoring them in the long run.
