I started the Sorensen Subscription Service nearly two years ago to compensate for the ongoing decline of print newspapers. Since then, I have indeed lost several newspaper clients, but can happily report that subscribers have softened the blow. Slow but steady growth in subscription numbers have more or less kept pace with the gradual disappearance of paying publications.
As of this writing, however, the already-struggling altweeklies who provide a substantial portion of my income are facing a sudden existential crisis. With coronavirus shutting down businesses across the country, the bars, restaurants, and arts events that help keep these papers afloat are no longer able to advertise as they did before. One of my clients just shut down permanently; another is shrinking and putting my strip on (hopefully temporary) hiatus. This is probably just the beginning of a landslide.
I’m determined to keep the cartoon going one way or another, but it’s becoming clear that subscriptions will need to play a larger role more quickly than I’d hoped. To that end, I hope you’ll consider joining the club. Subscribers receive the cartoon via email each week along with extended commentary, personal news, classic cartoons, and occasional process sketches. You’ll also stay in the loop about events, interviews, and any side projects.
The cost is $10/six months or $20/year — only $1.67 per month. There’s also a “high roller” option for those who wish to offer more support. I use Campaignzee (a Mailchimp-integrated service), as I prefer to keep things simple and independent, and have been pleased with them.
So sign up today! It’s cheap and easy and will give you a warm, gentle glow of satisfaction.
A NOTE ABOUT RENEWING SUBSCRIPTIONS: If you need to update your credit card info, you can manage your subscription at https://manage.campaignzee.
